The Order-to-Invoice Cycle in EDI
A retailer's 850 starts a sequence the supplier has to finish on time. Most chargebacks come from the replies, not the order: an 855 that arrives late, an 856 that does not match what is on the truck, or an 810 that bills a quantity the ASN never shipped. The three documents have to agree with each other and with the PO.
- 855 acknowledgment, usually within 24 to 48 hours. Confirm each line or say what changes. 855 guide
- 856 ship notice, sent when the order leaves and before it arrives. Each carton gets an SSCC that matches its GS1-128 label. 856 guide
- 810 invoice, billing what shipped at the agreed price, with the PO number and terms. 810 guide
If a partner rejects one of them with a 997 or 824, the EDI rejection explainer says what went wrong and where. After sending, check the replies line by line with Compare EDI documents, keep a readable copy with the EDI to PDF converter, and see what each retailer expects in the retailer EDI requirements. If you trade with a handful of retailers through a portal, agent-run web EDI is the next step.
