A 12 or 13 digit UPC or EAN becomes a GTIN-14 with the indicator digit below.

Printing straight on corrugated cases needs 0.635 mm or more. Thermal labels can go down to 0.495 mm.

4.83 mm frame all round.

Case Barcodes and the Pack Hierarchy

Each level you sell or ship gets its own GTIN. The consumer unit carries a UPC-A or EAN-13; the inner pack and the case each get a GTIN-14 built from the unit number with a different indicator digit; the pallet gets an SSCC on its label instead of a GTIN. A retailer's 850 orders cases by their GTIN-14 (qualifier UK in the PO1 segment) and your 856 reports them the same way, so the number on the box and the number in the EDI must agree.

The symbol sizes on this page follow the ITF-14 specification table and bearer bar rules in the GS1 General Specifications (sections 5.12.3.2 and 5.3.2.4). The GS1 US guide to barcodes covers which symbol to use where. Work out case numbers with the check digit calculator, print pallet and carton labels with the SSCC label generator, and convert cases to eaches with the unit of measure converter.

GTINs, SSCCs and GLNs must be built from a GS1 Company Prefix licensed to your company by your local GS1 member organisation, such as GS1 US or GS1 UK. Our examples use 0614141, the prefix GS1 uses in its own documentation. OrderSync builds these tools independently of GS1.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an ITF-14 barcode?

ITF-14 is the barcode printed on outer cases and shipper cartons. It encodes the 14-digit GTIN of the case using Interleaved 2 of 5, which prints reliably on corrugated board. A heavy border, the bearer bar, protects it from misreads at the edges.

How do I get the GTIN-14 for my case?

Put an indicator digit from 1 to 8 in front of the unit's UPC (padded to 13 digits), drop the UPC's check digit and calculate a new one. Enter the UPC here with the indicator and the generator does it for you: UPC 614141123452 with indicator 1 becomes 10614141123459.

What size should an ITF-14 barcode be?

GS1 allows a narrow bar (X-dimension) from 0.495 mm to 1.016 mm, with 0.635 mm or more when printing directly on corrugate, bars at least 31.75 mm high, and quiet zones of 10 times the narrow bar on each side. At 1.016 mm (100% magnification) the symbol with its bearer frame is about 152 by 41 mm.

Do I need the bearer bar?

GS1 makes it mandatory unless it is technically impossible. With printing plates it is a 4.83 mm frame all the way round, quiet zones included. On labels and other printing without plates, bars at least twice the narrow bar width across the top and bottom are enough.

ITF-14 or GS1-128 for cases?

Both can carry a case GTIN-14. ITF-14 holds only the GTIN and prints well on brown corrugate. Use GS1-128 when the case also needs a batch or lot number, a best-before date or a weight, since GS1-128 can carry those with application identifiers.

Can I make several barcodes at once?

Yes. Open Several barcodes in one PDF and paste up to 200 GTINs or UPCs, one per line. The PDF has one true-size barcode per page.
