UOM Codes That Cause Wrong Quantities

A wrong unit code turns a 10-case order into 10 bottles. These codes are easy to mix up:

CodeWhat it meansWhat people expect
CSCassette (X12)Case, which is CA in X12 and XCS in Rec 20
IPInsurance policy (X12)Inner pack, which has no X12 unit code
PCENot a current codePiece: PC in X12, H87 in Rec 20
GR / GS / GMGram / gross (144) / grams per square meterAny of the three, swapped
OZ / FOOunce by weight / fluid ounceEither one for a 12 oz can
CRCubic meter (X12)Crate, which is CP

X12 codes are from data element 355 as listed in the public X12 element 355 reference. EDIFACT, EANCOM and Peppol use UN/ECE Recommendation 20; Revision 17 deleted the old two-letter package codes (CS, CT, BX, PK) in favour of the X-prefixed Recommendation 21 codes listed in the Peppol code list. The X12 to Rec 20 pairs follow SAP Ariba's published mapping, updated to current Rec 20 codes.

Check the units on a real document with the EDI Inspector (X12) or the EDIFACT Inspector, and build case barcodes with the ITF-14 generator and the UPC to GTIN-14 converter.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does UOM mean?

UOM stands for unit of measure: the unit a quantity is counted in, such as each (EA), case (CA), pallet (PL), pound (LB) or kilogram (KGM). On a purchase order or invoice the UOM tells the supplier whether 10 means ten bottles or ten cases of twelve.

What is the UOM code for case?

In X12 EDI it is CA. In EDIFACT, EANCOM and Peppol invoices, which use UN/ECE Recommendation 20, it is XCS (the X prefix marks a Recommendation 21 package code). CS is a common mistake: in X12, CS means cassette.

What is the difference between EA and PC?

EA (each) is one sellable unit. PC (piece) is one physical piece, which matters when one sellable unit has several pieces, such as a two-piece set. Most retailers order in EA. In Rec 20 the equivalents are EA or C62 for each and H87 for piece.

How many eaches are in a case?

It depends on the product's pack size, which comes from the item set-up, not from the code. A case of 4 inner packs of 6 holds 24 eaches. Enter your pack sizes in the converter to see any quantity in eaches, inner packs, cases and pallets.

Is there a UOM code for inner pack?

Not in X12. IP in X12 means insurance policy. The inner pack count is sent as a number in the PO4 segment of an 850 or 832, and the order quantity uses EA, CA or another unit code.

Where do these codes come from?

X12 codes are data element 355 (Unit or Basis for Measurement Code). EDIFACT codes come from UN/ECE Recommendation 20, Revision 17, with Recommendation 21 package codes prefixed X. We list each code with its short name only.
