Packing Slips, Packing Lists and Delivery Notes

A packing slip travels with the shipment and lists what is inside, so the receiver can check the delivery against their purchase order before they sign for it. It is not an invoice and not a bill of lading: the invoice asks for payment, and the bill of lading is the contract with the carrier.

Retailers that trade by EDI receive the same information electronically as an 856 advance ship notice, with an SSCC on every carton. The EDI response builder drafts that 856 from the purchase order. For the carrier paperwork, use the bill of lading generator; to place the order in the first place, the purchase order generator; and for the seller's copy of the order, the sales order template.

Frequently Asked Questions

What goes on a packing slip?

The ship-from and ship-to addresses, the order and customer PO numbers, the ship date, and every item in the box with its SKU, description, quantity ordered and quantity shipped. Prices are usually left off, because the person unpacking is not the person paying. Add the carrier, tracking number, package count and weight when you have them.

Is a delivery note the same as a packing slip?

Yes. Delivery note is the UK and European name, packing slip or packing list the US one. Switch the wording to UK and the generator uses delivery note, despatch date, deliver to and postcode, and defaults to A4 paper.

Should a packing slip show prices?

Usually not. This generator leaves prices off so the slip can go in the box. Send prices on the invoice instead.

Is this packing slip template free?
