Interview Questions That Actually Screen
Here is a raw 856 a retailer rejected. Find the problem.
What to listen for: Reads the segments without a translator, checks the hierarchy and quantities against the order, and names a likely fix. A practical test tells you more than any resume line.
Walk me through onboarding a new retail trading partner, from first email to first live order.
What to listen for: Implementation guide review, mapping, test documents, partner sign-off, and a watched first live cycle.
A 997 came back rejecting yesterday's invoices. What do you do first?
What to listen for: Finds which documents and segments failed, fixes and resends them, then asks why validation did not catch it before sending.
How do you keep item and pricing data in step between your ERP and a partner's catalog?
What to listen for: A defined source of truth and a routine (832 or catalog refresh), rather than fixing mismatches one order at a time.
Tell me about a chargeback you traced back to an EDI cause. What did you change?
What to listen for: A specific chargeback, its root cause in data or timing, and a process fix.
Before You Post the Req
EDI coordinators spend their time in two places: keeping partner connections healthy and cleaning up documents that failed. The first needs a person. The second shrinks when orders, ship notices, and invoices are validated against the order and the partner's rules before they go out. Hire for onboarding and exceptions, not for watching a queue.
- Manual order entry costs and error rates (BLS-verified per-order math)
- Manual order entry cost calculator (your volume, your wages)
- Free PO extractor (upload one of your real order PDFs and watch the capture step disappear)
How to Answer "Are You EDI Capable?"
A buyer asked, and you need to answer this week. The four things they are checking, what you can say yes to today, and a realistic date for the rest.
- What a buyer is really asking when they ask this
- The minimum set-up that makes the answer yes
- What you can answer today versus what needs building
- Rough timelines, so you can give a date rather than a maybe

FAQ
How much does an EDI coordinator make?
PayScale puts the median base for an EDI coordinator at $62k, with the 10th to 90th percentile at $46k to $82k (65 self-reported profiles, updated June 2026). Analyst-titled roles report higher: KORE1 cites a Salary.com EDI analyst median of $68,308 and a Glassdoor EDI analyst average of $104,674 (August 2026).
Why do EDI salary figures vary so much?
The trackers measure different titles and different samples. Coordinator titles that watch the queue and chase partners sit lower; analyst and mapping roles that onboard partners and edit maps sit higher. Price the role from the work it carries, then check postings in your market.
Does BLS publish salary data for EDI roles?
No. BLS has no EDI occupation. Two published medians bracket the role: order clerks at $46,170 and computer systems analysts at $105,850 (BLS OEWS, May 2025).
