Read as YDDD: 2024, day 297.

How we chose the year

The code only has the last digit of the year (4). We read it as 2024: the most recent year ending in 4, because a production date is in the past. The same code also fits 2014 and 2034.

How to Read a Julian Date Code

A Julian date code is the day of the year, 001 to 365 (366 in a leap year), printed with some or all of the year. Manufacturers use it as the production or pack date in lot codes because it is short and sorts in date order. 24297 is the 297th day of 2024: October 23, 2024.

Letters and extra digits around the date usually name the plant, line or shift. In L24297 B2, the date is 24297 and L and B2 identify the line and batch. The converter reads the digits and shows the rest separately.

Which Year Is a 4-Digit Code?

A YDDD code such as 4297 carries only the last digit of the year, so it fits 2014, 2024 and 2034 equally. For a production date the converter takes the most recent year ending in that digit, since nothing is made in the future. For a best-by date it takes the year within five years of today. When the result is still in doubt, it says so and lists the other decade, so a receiving clerk can check it against the case.

Leap Years Move Every Date After February

Day 60 is March 1 in 2026 but February 29 in 2024. Printed Julian calendars come in two versions for this reason, and using the wrong one puts every spring and summer code a day out. The calendar on this page switches with the year you pick, and day 366 is rejected in any year that does not have one.

Lot Codes, Best-By Dates and Barcodes

The USDA calls Julian codes closed or coded dates: packing numbers for tracking and recalls, not a safety date for the shopper. On a GS1-128 case label the same information is in plain YYMMDD form under application identifiers (10) batch or lot, (11) production date, (15) best before and (17) expiry, listed in the GS1 application identifier reference. Foods on the FDA Food Traceability List also need a traceability lot code under the FSMA 204 traceability rule.

On an 856 ship notice the lot travels in the LIN segment with qualifier LT and the expiration date in DTM*036; check one with the EDI Inspector. Build the case label itself with the SSCC label generator, check the GTIN on it with the check digit calculator, and convert cases to eaches with the unit of measure converter.

The Astronomical Julian Day

Astronomers count days continuously from noon UTC on January 1, 4713 BC, so January 1, 2000 at noon is Julian Day 2451545. It has nothing to do with lot codes, but it shares the name. The Julian Day tab converts it both ways, and the US Naval Observatory converter covers dates before 1900.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is today's Julian date?

It is shown at the top of this page in every common format, using your local date. In the YYDDD format it is the last two digits of the year followed by the day of the year, so October 23, 2026 is 26296: day 296 of 2026. The 3-digit version is just the day (296), and the 4-digit version is the last digit of the year plus the day (6296).

How do I read a Julian date code like 4297 or 24297?

The last three digits are the day of the year, from 001 for January 1 to 365 (or 366 in a leap year) for December 31. The digits in front are the year. 24297 is 2024, day 297, which is October 23, 2024. 4297 has only the last digit of the year, so it is day 297 of a year ending in 4: 2024 for anything made recently.

Is a Julian date code the expiration date?

Usually not. On most food, beverage and consumer goods the Julian code is the production or pack date, and the best-by or use-by date is printed separately in plain text. To work out a best-by date from a production code, add the product's shelf life in the Shelf life tab.

How do leap years change Julian dates?

In a leap year February has 29 days, so every date from March 1 onward is one day number higher: March 1 is day 61 instead of 60, and December 31 is day 366. A code ending in 366 is only valid in a leap year such as 2024 or 2028. The converter applies this automatically.

What is a JD Edwards Julian date (CYYDDD)?

JD Edwards and IBM i store dates as six digits: a century digit (0 for the 1900s, 1 for the 2000s), the 2-digit year and the day of the year. 126296 is 2026, day 296. Pick CYYDDD in the format list, or let Detect format read 6-digit codes that way.

Is a Julian date the same as the Julian calendar?

No. A Julian date code on a product is the day of the year in the normal (Gregorian) calendar. Astronomers use the Julian Day Number, a count of days since January 1, 4713 BC, where January 1, 2000 at noon is 2451545. The Julian calendar is the older calendar Europe used before 1582. This page converts the first two.

Can I convert a whole list of lot codes?

Yes. Paste a column of codes or open a CSV in the Bulk codes tab, up to 10,000 at a time. Each code gets a calendar date, the format it was read as, any other possible reading, and an optional best-by date, and you can download the results as CSV or Excel.

Is my data uploaded?

No. Every conversion, including bulk lists and CSV files, runs in your browser. Nothing you type or open is sent to OrderSync.
