Broken EDI 850 Sample: Errors to Find

Broken on purpose: 3 faults a translator rejects. A X12 file to test a validator with, explained segment by segment.

A synthetic file: made-up companies, IDs and amounts, safe to load into a test system.

This 850 is broken on purpose to test an EDI validator. It has three faults: SE01 says 9 segments when the transaction has 10, CTT01 says 3 lines when there are 2 PO1 segments, and the first UPC has a wrong check digit. A trading partner's translator would reject it with a 997.

About This 850 Sample

Testing only with clean files tells you little. A validator earns its keep on the files that fail, so this one carries the three faults that cause most real 997 rejections and chargebacks: a segment count, a line count and a GS1 check digit.

Open it in the EDI Inspector to see each fault named at its segment, with the value it should hold.

For every segment the standard allows and how retailers use them, read the EDI 850 guide. To check a file of your own, paste it into the EDI Inspector, or browse all 22 EDI sample files.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an EDI 850?

This 850 is broken on purpose to test an EDI validator. It has three faults: SE01 says 9 segments when the transaction has 10, CTT01 says 3 lines when there are 2 PO1 segments, and the first UPC has a wrong check digit. A trading partner's translator would reject it with a 997.

Can I use this EDI 850 sample to test my system?

Yes, as a negative test. This file is broken on purpose, so a correct translator or validator should reject it and name each fault: SE01 is 9, but ST to SE holds 10 segments. CTT01 is 3, but the order has 2 PO1 lines. UPC 020000000016 has a bad check digit. It should end in 5.

How do I check my own EDI 850 file?

Paste it into the free OrderSync EDI Inspector. It names every segment and element, checks the envelope counts and control numbers, tests GS1 check digits, and points at the exact segment a trading partner would reject. Nothing is uploaded: the file is read in your browser.
